Aladdin "Built in a Day" House Catalog, 1917 (Dover Books on Architecture)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1995)
Author: Aladdin Company
Average review score:

A reprint of a good Aladdin Catalogue
This is an 8 x 11, 117 page [Dover] reprint of Aladdin's 1917 Catalog. The print and architectural renderings (house sketches) are really very good.

The back of the book has garages, hardware miscellany, colonnades, arches, built-ins, etc.

The first dozen pages are company history and background, which I find completely fascinating.

The catalog looks like most house catalogs of this era, with an angled, although primarily frontal view of the house, with floor plans, house description, etc.

It's pretty interesting reading and most folks would enjoy perusing it. I have several Dover Publication reprints and always find them good additions to my ever growing historical architecture library.

And if you're doing research on Sears Catalog homes, like me, this Aladdin book is an invaluable research tool because it really highlights the *similarities* between these different catalog homes.

All catalog houses, it turns out, look surprisingly alike. Only vague nuances separate the Aladdins from the MWards houses and the Sears Houses. They all copied one another - changing a front entry or a bracketed eave or some other minimal change.

The Aladdin 1917 Catalog is interesting and a good quality reprint.

All the Sweet Promises
Published in Audio Cassette by Isis Audio (February, 2000)
Authors: Elizabeth Elgin and Anne Dover

All the sweet Promises
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and had great difficulty putting it down once I had begun. Elgin totlally engrosed me with her sympathetic approach.

The story is of three girls from very different but plausible backgrounds, who by chance, end up meeting on a railway station on their way to their 'ship' in Scotland during World War II. It tells of their exploits and love stories as the war progresses. Whilst this was an era I was not alive in it felt extreamly real and the factual references were so accurate they amased me. Being the daughter of a World War II telegraphist also stationed in Scotland it made real many of the things the girls were involved in. Obviously Elgin was using her first hand knowlede to great effect. These girls became my friends whilst I read andI had to go on to read another of Elgin's masterpieces .

American Indian Design and Decoration (The Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1976)
Author: Leroy H. Appleton
Average review score:

A history of native art!
I wanted to learn about the western hemisphere art as a whole and not country by country and that's precisely what I found in this book. Well detailed designs and astonishing information such as poems, myths, symbols explanations... unfortunately, some countries -as Ecuador- are not represented and that's a pitty because they have many motifs to show to the world. Anyway, I think this is a must in decorators' or art historian's library!

Amish Patterns for Machine Quilting (Dover Needlework Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1997)
Authors: Pat Holly and Sue Nickels
Average review score:

Good, useful book
A useful tool for the machine quilting library. There are about 50 templates including very basic, simple designs, plus flowers (lots and lots of them), baskets, stars, leaves, hearts, and combinations. Each template is shown on one page along with a diagram showing arrows of how to sew the design with only one starting point. Some designs do require multiple starting points but many are single-line (although much turning) designs. Some corner designs are shown and some attention is given to patterns that turn a corner. About half the patterns are the kind that might be used in a quilt block (not continuous border-type designs), such as tulips, stars, or baskets. I was looking more for new continuous-line, border-type patterns and did not see much new in that area. One page provides a detailed diagram showing how to quilt feathers. Being more of a beginner-level, self-taught quilter, the feathers always looked too difficult to me. But now I see clearly how to proceed and might actually try this design!

Angels and Cherubs: Stained Glass Pattern Book (Dover Pictorial Archive Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1998)
Author: Connie Clough Eaton
Average review score:

Beautiful angels.
This book gives you 60 stained glass angels and cherubs that can be done in a variety of art forms. The patterns for the most part are very detailed in the wings and flowers within the patterns. These patterns are not for beginners because of the amount of detail.

Animal ABC Stickers (Dover Little Activity Books)

Author: Cathy Beylon

Animal ABC Stickers
This is a cute little book with reusable stickers, there are 26 stickers, one of each letter, and an animal whose name begins with that letter. We have fun sticking them on different objects around the house and I believe it is helping my 2 year old learn his letters. He can't wait until we move them to new objects. It is really amazing how much they can teach a child, when you use them to create a simple game.

The Architecture of McKim, Mead, and White in Photos, Plans, and Elevations (Dover Books on Architecture)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (December, 1990)
Authors: White McKim, Mead, White, Mead D. McKim, Richard Guy Wilson, and McKim Mead & White
Average review score:

A book on how things used to be.
Man-o-man, I used to love looking at old buildings and would be in awe of the amount of work that went into them. All of the art work, craftsmanship, and downright labor. Well, this book really brings to the forefront through numerous period photos and floor plans. The book actually contains very little wording, but then the photos and floor plans are enough to tell you many things about the structures. Most of the buildings are in New York City and I recently had the opportunity to visit. As I walked along the many streets, I came across buildings that had been built by the architects and it was just awesome to look, of course, only from the outside at the wonderful structure and compare it to the photos and floor plans that are now etched in my mind. I look at the book and discover new things about the works of art that I hadn't known before. Sorry if it sounds a little romantic but when I pass one of the new office buildings or structures, well, I'm just not moved by them. Dave Sanchez
